Safer Smarter Teens

In November, counselors will be teaching safety lessons on “Safer, Smarter Teens.”  We were one of the middle schools in Pasco County to pilot this important curriculum, which will be expanded to all Pasco County Schools in 2017-18.

This age-appropriate personal safety curriculum empowers students to protect themselves in potentially unsafe situations and provides practical strategies to help teens protect themselves without being explicit or frightening.

Counselors in the Classroom

Starting in October, school counselors will work on rotation to teach the first lesson of the year.  8th grade lessons are the Safer Smarter Teens curriculum, which teach students about safety skills for teens.  6th and 7th grade lessons are the Orientation lesson, teaching students who their counselor is, how to access counseling support, what a counselor helps with, and ways to solve conflict.

6th Grade Conflict Lesson

8th grade Career Lesson

During the weeks of February 16 – 23, all 8th graders will have Career exploration lessons and create accounts that will be used through their senior year for college and/or career planning.

The lesson focuses on interest and ability surveys and possible career clusters that best align with the student’s interests and skills.  Students can then explore the array of careers, incomes, and education requirements for each career.

Counselors in the Classrooms

The first classroom lessons by the counseling department will take place in September:

  • Ms. Northcutt will teach 6th graders 9/8-9/11
  • Ms. Holzum will teach 7th graders 9/14-9/18.
  • Ms. Pinsky will teach 8th graders 9/21-9/25.

These lessons will focus on handling unkind words and actions, accessing support, as well as other items required by district.
