Thomas E. Wieghtman Beginning Band …..2018-2019

Welcome Letter

Dear Beginning Band Member and Parents,

Welcome to Thomas E. Weightman Middle School Band program! Thank you for taking a brief moment to review some important information that could have a lasting impact on the future of your child. All parents interested in providing the most valuable opportunity for their children; these next few sentences will help you in that extremely important goal.

Research shows the study of music is one of the most effective tools to improve learning throughout a child’s academic curriculum. Each year T.E.W.M.S offers the chance for all incoming 6th grade and returning middle school students to participate in beginning band. We are very excited about our band program and eagerly look forward to this new group of emerging young artists who will make up this year’s class of talented musicians.

A little bit about me, I am a native from Tampa, Florida.  I began playing the trumpet at the age of ten. I received my formal training from Blake High School of the Performing Arts, and the illustrious Bethune Cookman University. After receiving my Bachelors I taught as the Head Band Director at schools across Florida. I recently received my Master from Florida State University in Music Education.  Outside of teaching my love for music continues on. I am a part of the well-known band The Distinguished Men of Brass. We were featured on the television show America Got Talent. As a result of our appearance on tv we were invited to perform all over the country.

The first couple of weeks your child will be introduced and given the opportunity to try all of instruments. The instrument that your child plays will be based off of an evaluation by me and preference from your child.  There are many factors that will lead to the success of your child while picking the best fit instrument.  With commitment and my guidance I will assure that your child will be successful.

I have enclosed the Band Hand Book, and many other forms that need to be completed.  Please sign and return all forms and dues no later than 8/18/17.

Thank you for your time as we prepare to begin what is sure to be a fantastic musical journey with your child. I look forward to the chance to help each student grow artistically and perform in the musical spotlight. Please don’t hesitate to call or email. I can be reached at 813-794-0350 or via email

Musically Yours,

Donald Scott
