Curriculum Guides for Parents:

KINDERGARTEN

Your kindergartener will experiment and explore the world of art and digital media while using materials correctly and safely.  He/she will experiment with primary and secondary colors and geometric shapes. Your child will learn to use accurate art vocabulary and procedures during the creative process that will help him/her describe his/her work.

You can support your child at home by:

  • discussing the colors and shapes used within the artwork.
  • talking about comic strips, book covers or illustrations, posters, etc.
  • visiting a museum or art show.

FIRST GRADE

Your first grader will experiment and explore the world of art and technology while using materials correctly and safely.  They will experiment with primary and secondary colors and geometric shapes. Your child will learn to use accurate art vocabulary and procedures during the creative process that will help him/her describe his/her work.

You can support your child at home by:

  • discussing the colors and shapes used within the artwork.
  • talking about comic strips, book covers or illustrations, posters, etc.
  • visiting a museum or art show.
  • Expressing ideas in drawings

SECOND GRADE

Your second grader will experiment with a variety of two and three-dimensional concepts and ideas in art and technology. Your child will learn to use materials safely while conveying personal interests and self-expression. He/she will learn to use accurate art vocabulary and procedures during the creative process that will help your child describe his/her work. Your child will identify, describe, and discuss attributes of artwork from individuals and cultures.

You can support your child at home by:

  • describing the geometric shapes used within the artwork.
  • drawing pictures of common objects.
  • visiting a museum or art show.

THIRD GRADE

Your third grader will incorporate a variety of two and three-dimensional concepts and ideas in art and technology. He/she will learn to use materials safely while conveying personal interests and self-expression.  Your child will use observation skills, prior knowledge, and art criticism to reflect on and interpret art.  He/she will learn to use accurate art vocabulary and procedures with resources and time-management skills during the creative process.

You can support your child at home by:

  • describing the geometric shapes used within the artwork.
  • measuring the elements within the artwork using a tape measure or ruler.
  • describing how illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words.
  • visiting a museum or art exhibit.

FOURTH GRADE

Your fourth grader will incorporate a variety of two and three-dimensional concepts and ideas in art and digital media.  He/she will use observation skills, prior knowledge, and art-criticism skills to reflect on and revise works of art.  During the creative process, your child will learn to use accurate art vocabulary and procedures, as well as time-management and collaboration skills.

You can support your child at home by:

  • describing the geometric shapes used within artwork.
  • discussing the events that happened in history and the artwork connected to them.
  • visiting a museum or art exhibit.

FIFTH GRADE

Your fifth grader will incorporate a variety of two and three-dimensional concepts and ideas in art, technology and processes to influence personal artistic decisions. Your child will learn to use art-criticism to interpret creative products.  He/she will collaborate, make observations and use prior knowledge to reflect and revise works of art. Your child will learn to use accurate art vocabulary, procedures and time-management.

You can support your child at home by:

  • talking about the creative process involved in creating art.
  • discussing the lines and rhythm of a piece of artwork.
  • visiting a museum or art exhibit.
