2nd grade students used elephants to demonstrate line patterns. They used their names to show symmetry. They created geometric shapes with cool colors and organic shapes with warm colors.

3rd grade students created the Positive & Negative designs using complementary colors. They used value and complementary colors to create the ice cream cones. They used lines to show movement in their line landscape.

2nd grade was working on the Element of Art = SHAPE. (the difference between organic and geometric shapes)
3rd grade was working on the Element of Art = COLOR. (the complementary color scheme – opposite on the color wheel)
Concept = Native American History
2nd grade worked on creating a story using Native American symbols. They also worked on a large collaborative project doing the same.
3rd grade compared and contrasted the artwork from three different Native American tribes. Students used paper to weave and design a “rug” inspired by one or more of the Native American tribes we studied.
Concept = Surrealism – dreamlike art
2nd grade studied Joan Miro’s surrealism
3rd grade studied Rene Magritte’s surrealism. They did their version of Magritte’s “The False Mirror”, 1928
2nd grade concept = symmetrical and asymmetrical

Students reviewed primary and secondary colors. Then they chose 1 color to create a tint and a shade of that color.
Tint is white mixed with a little of their color choice. It is a lighter color.
Shade is their color mixed with a little black. It is a darker color.
