What Do Symbols Represent in Math?
In this unit, students will use the vocabulary terms greater than, less than, and equal to – as well as mathematical symbols <, >, and = to compare 2-digit numbers.
We will also work with balancing equations.
It is critical students understand that the equal sign (=) represents a relationship and not an action. Reading “=” as same as rather than equals is one way to reinforce this important concept.
Your Scout should begin to write equations with unknowns as they solve problems. When given an equation with an unknown, they should also be able to explain their thinking/reasoning as they find the missing value
