School Counseling Services

CLASSROOM GUIDANCE  Mrs. Keene presents guidance lessons 5-6 times a year to every grade level throughout the school year.  These lessons address developmental issues common to all elementary school students in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social.  Topics include bullying, conflict resolution, empathy, digital citizenship, personal body safety, school success.  To see what we are talking about this month, click here.

SMALL GROUP COUNSELING  Small groups are developed based on individual needs throughout the school year.  Participation in small groups may be requested by students, parents, or teachers. Additional group topics can be added if need arises.  If you have any questions or would like to request that your child be placed in a group, please contact the school counselor.  Students will need to have a signed permission slip to participate a small group.

INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING  Individual counseling is available to students at the request of students, parents, or teachers.  Students wishing to see the counselor should fill out a  ‘See the Counselor’ form, located outside the guidance office.    Many students pop-in to resolve a quick conflict and do not need any follow-up.  However, if students need a more structured series of counseling services, then a signed permission slip is required.   Due to the time limitations in the school setting, Mrs. Keene is not able to provide long term counseling or therapy.  If it is determined that a student needs more in depth help, a referral can be made for individual sessions from an outside agency.

A little bit about me ….   I obtained both my Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the USF Tampa campus.  I spent 5 years working at a local mental health facility providing family counseling before switching over to Pasco County in 2003 to work as a teacher.  I spent 10 years teaching before making the switch to a career that encompassed both my loves, teaching and counseling.  Being a school counselor is one of the best jobs I’ve had.  I love working in a school setting and providing students with the support and skills they need to become the best person they can!
