The brilliant team of Tom Jacobsen, Site Coordinator along with his wonderful staff, leads R.B. Cox STAR Academy. They generate even more flare and spice to lessons within the STAR program. The staff works together to create a comfortable, warm, caring environment that delivers creative and engaging lessons in Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math (STEM).
Most recently, the group received an excellent evaluation as students participated in their afterschool activities, which included computer research, aligning with the school day activities to learn site words, and engaging in a social studies lesson. Quail Hollow STAR Academy began their Summer “Road Trip”, first by flight...and a visit from Delta Airlines Capatain, Joel Loftin, who spoke about air travel, being a pilot and how airplanes stay in the sky! In Hawaii, we designed, built and water tested mini surfboards, made leis and totem creations and learned about volcanoes! Alaska we learned about the science behind the northern lights and created our own mural and pictures depicting the glowing, colorful lights. We explored arctic animals and their habitats in our polar science center, built our own Alaskan stilt houses, like those in Ukivok, as well as igloo dioramas!
