Hurricane Weekend Assignment

As  you know, our first competition is in a week. We are missing out on a rehearsal and a performance at a game, so I want to make up for that through individual practice over the long weekend. See the assignment instructions below:

THIS IS DUE BY 11:59 P.M. ON SUNDAY, 10/9

Directions: Take a 10 minute video of yourself practicing something that is difficult for you in the show. NOT SOMETHING YOU ARE GOOD AT. If you are not doing so great in the video, that is a GOOD thing. Practicing things you aren’t good at is what you are supposed to do when you practice. Although, I do expect to see some improvement on the problem area within this video. If you are practicing any musical excerpt I expect to see step-offs as well.

This video can be broken up into smaller, 1-2 minute videos to reduce the video size if you have problems sending longer videos.

This video must be sent to Mrs. Batts via e-mail at

rbatts@pasco.k12.fl.us

OR

Sent as a private message to the Land O’ Lakes High School facebook page (can be found on the sidebar of this website).

I am giving Facebook as an option because sometimes it can be more user-friendly to send large videos via facebook as compared to e-mail.

Homework Assignment Due Before 9/9 Game

All students must do this assignment, including band members not in my class.

Watch the following videos of today’s rehearsal. Write a personal letter of constructive criticism to yourself. Do not worry about other band members, just yourself. How could you improve on your personal performance before tomorrow’s game? A paragraph for each movement. Movement 3’s video cuts off because my phone overheated.

First Home Game 8/26

Hello everyone,

We have our first HOME game this Friday, 8/26. We need 7 chaperones, one chaperone per every ten students. We also need one parent to pick up pizza at 3:00 p.m. For the students that stay after school.

EVERY PARENT MUST FILL OUT THE PASCO VOLUNTEER APPLICATION, EVEN IF YOU DON’T THINK YOU WILL BE HELPING WITH ANY EVENTS. YOU NEVER KNOW!!

After this is filled out you must forward your acceptance e-mail to Jeannie Womack (our volunteer coordinator) at:

jjcmwomack@msn.com

If you are not an approved volunteer for Pasco County, you will not be able to chaperone an event. If we do not have enough approved volunteers to chaperone an event, we will not be able to participate in the event. This goes for every event we put on.

Here is the link to apply to be a volunteer in Pasco County:

https://webdb.pasco.k12.fl.us/fmi/iwp/cgi?-db=vol_db&-loadframes

Also, many of you have not turned in your water bottle cases. We need a case of water bottles per student turned in to the band room ASAP. It will keep your child hydrated at all of our games/competitions.

Call time for the game this Friday is 5:30 p.m. Students may stay after school if they wish. If they go home they must be ready to play at 5:30, not walking in the door at 5:30.

Remember to bring the following items:

-Marching shoes

-Marching gloves

-Long, black socks

-Wear show shirt all Friday

-Black athletic shorts to wear under the uniform

-Money for concession stands, or pizza money ($5) if you are staying after school. You cannot order pizza if you are coming at 5:30. We are ordering pizza at 3:00 p.m.

Thanks,

Riley Batts

Band Camp Survival Guide

BAND CAMP INFORMATION AND SURVIVAL GUIDE!! (AKA how to not be “that guy” and pass out)

-Eat breakfast every day before you arrive. DO NOT eat/drink dairy or caffeine – you’ll be glad you did when you hit the heat!

-Lunch/Dinner – Bring your own every day. NO CAFFEINATED OR CARBONATED DRINKS! (I will take them away from you)

-A snack to bring outside to raise your blood sugar. Suggested snacks: Pretzels, peanuts, almonds.

-Students MAY NOT leave campus at any time during band camp, even during the lunch/dinner break.

What to Wear

-NO JEANS, SANDALS, FLIP-FLOPS, TANK TOPS, OR ANYTHING ELSE NOT UNDER SCHOOL DRESS CODE. NO BLACK CLOTHING. (all above includes the front ensemble, as you WILL be outside too)

-Suggested attire: Hat, sunglasses, light-colored shirt, school appropriate athletic shorts. If you are out of dress code, I have plenty of XXL shirts/shorts (with drawstrings) for you to wear. If you want to be fashionable, do so within the dress code.

Necessary Items to Bring

-You must bring your own water, and plenty of it! A 1-gallon thermal water jug is suggested. Can be found at Walmart for a very low price.

-Plenty of Sunscreen and insect repellent

-Sneakers are the ONLY acceptable shoes for marching practice

-Lunch/Dinner and snacks

-A “DOT BOOK” – small, durable semi-waterproof index card binder

-A shoelace or string to attach the dotbook to yourself

-A pencil (mechanical is best as there aren’t pencil sharpeners on the field)

-A flip folder with pages and a lyre for your specific instrument

-Your MUSIC

-Instrument supplies such as reeds, valve oil, slide cream, mouthpiece, mallets, MUSIC

-A positive attitude!! Band camp can be hot, sweaty, rainy, frustrating and difficult at times, but with a positive attitude and motivation you will be amazing and proud of what we all accomplish TOGETHER!

Additional Suggested Items

-Sunglasses

-Extra pair of socks (in case of rain)

-A jacket/sweatshirt for coming in to the air conditioning after rain

-A hat

-A beach towel

I can’t wait to see all of your smiling faces on Monday!

Musically,

Mrs. Batts
